Roman Fragments and Socialist Lines in Sofia

Read Sofia through Roman fragments, churches, civic façades, socialist-era lines, and modern streets that reveal the capital as a city built in visible layers.

Sofia’s architecture makes sense when seen as a sequence of layers rather than a single historic center. Roman remains appear beside later churches, nineteenth- and early twentieth-century civic buildings, broad twentieth-century avenues, apartment blocks, and new commercial spaces. The contrasts can be abrupt, but that is exactly what gives the capital its visual identity. Travelers who walk between the central streets and nearby neighborhoods can watch the city change materials and scale within minutes. A polished façade may face a practical concrete building; a quiet religious courtyard may sit close to heavy traffic. Instead of judging one period against another, notice how Sofia continues to reuse and inhabit all of them. The city’s architecture is a record of continuity, rupture, and adaptation. Its most interesting streets often contain several eras at once. A slow walk becomes less about “beautiful versus ugly” and more about understanding how a very old city has repeatedly rebuilt itself.
